Square Foot Gardening in Keyna |
|
Dear Rose,
It sounds like you are continuing
to do wonderful work! This past February I was blessed to be
able to travel to Kenya to begin a couple of different Square Foot
Gardening projects. While there, we started SFG gardens in two
different slums. One was at the Hands With Hope Safe House where
approximately 20 orphans are housed. At times, they were only
able to eat every other day because of lack of food. Now, with
the gardens, they have plenty to eat and as they add more and more
boxes, they hope to be able to sell the excess to raise money.
At another slum in Nairobi, we
taught Mama Lucy Odipo how to have a garden. It is amazing what
they have accomplished in a short time. The area used for the
garden was littered with "flying toilets" which are plastic
grocery sacks used as toilets and then just tossed anywhere.
Mama Lucy cleaned up the area, fenced it and was ready when we
arrived. She is now growing a garden there to feed the children
of the Little Bees school she started. They are thrilled to be
able to do this and are now reaching beyond their immediate area in
the slum to clean up surrounding areas.
This brief synopsis just scratches
the surface of the story. If you are interested, I'd be glad to
write it up and send you pictures.
Thanks,
Karen Bastow

Note: Karen is preparing a more in-depth story with photos for us.l
